My first daily challenge series of 40 paintings, produced over Lent in 2021, became a 72-page book in 2022!

I created this series of 40 paintings over 40 days in observance of the season of Lent, leading up to Easter. The prayerful routine gave me a reason to look into what Lent is really about, and to actively participate in the tradition for the first time.

The book includes high-quality, actual-size prints of each painting—one per page—at an intimate size that fits nicely in your hand or your backpack. Think of it like a daily devotional, laid out in a beautiful, sparse design so you can spend time considering each piece, without distraction, one day at a time.

Deepen Your Lenten Practice

The paintings are minimalist, with a restrained, contemporary style, punctuated with pure white or metallic gold. Contrasting elements are juxtaposed purposefully: light and dark, precious and common, hopeful and somber, holy and base.

Interspersed, the book features a poetic Lenten prayer, written by my spouse Victoria, who’s a fellow in the Divinity School at Duke University. The prayer she’s written is poetic and heartfelt, and, in pairing with the paintings, I pray the book will accompany you in a rich, connected experience of Lent.
