These meditative paintings offer viewers space for contemplative reflection. The work is typically subdued, dark, and minimal, punctuated with pure white or metallic gold. The resulting compositions exemplify a restrained, contemporary style that juxtaposes elements meaningfully: light and dark, precious and common, hopeful and somber, holy and base.
By obfuscating landscape in abstraction and symbolism, my work allows the viewer to imagine landscape as metaphor. The dynamic created between various formal elements is a response to tensions in our lived experiences of seeking the precious amidst the mundane. Harsh, raw marks contrast deep, soft tones and crisp geometry. Metallic gold defies other more common materials. In a time of unknowing, fear, suffering and distraction, this work invites the viewer toward contemplation and reverence.
